Collaborators and Historic Sites

Lille Bønne

Nestled in the southeast edge of Downtown Indianapolis, Lille Bønne occupies a beautifully preserved Danish church originally built in 1872 by the Trinity Danish Evangelical Lutheran congregation - one of the earliest Danish-founded places of worship in the city.

Now lovingly reimagined as a “third-space” community hub, Lille Bønne invites neighbors to gather in a relaxed, welcoming environment - not quite a café, not quite a studio - but a place where coffee, art, yoga, movie nights, and social connection blend seamlessly. This blend of cultural preservation and inclusive programming ties the vibrant tapestry of Danish heritage to the dynamic life of Fletcher Place today.

Indiana Historical Society

The Indiana Historical Society (IHS), a proud Smithsonian Affiliate, collects and preserves Indiana’s unique stories, brings Hoosiers together in remembering and sharing the past, and inspires a future grounded in our state’s unifying values and principles. From its home at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center in downtown Indianapolis, IHS offers immersive exhibits, rich archives, and educational programs that bring history - and the many cultures that shape it - to life. IHS is a Smithsonian Affiliate.

By integrating the Danish cultural dimension - through preserved photographs, documents, and stories - IHS ensures that the narrative of Danish Hoosiers becomes an integral part of Indiana's collective memory.

'Denmark' in Indiana

Denmark, Owen County, Indiana, is a quiet rural community nestled in Marion Township in the southwest part of the county. Situated roughly 15 miles west of Spencer - the county seat - Denmark lies at the crossroads of County Road 1400 West (Kelly Road) and County Road 150 South (Denmark Road), with an elevation of about 722 feet (220 m).

Despite its humble size and unincorporated status, Denmark possesses a distinct historical footprint. The settlement was never formally platted, but it nonetheless held its own post office from 1874 to 1906, operated by William Herstine, who also ran the local store - effectively the community’s focal point. The name “Denmark” is widely believed to be a tribute to the European nation of the same name, reflecting either admiration or origin.

Indy's Global Village

Indy’s Welcome Center serves as a hub for experiencing and learning about the many cultures that shape our city - right in the heart of the International Marketplace.

Among our many exhibits, the Danish section showcases artifacts and cultural treasures. Each year, our Danish Christmas Tree - beautifully decorated with traditional ornaments - adds a festive and authentic touch to the holiday season, inviting everyone to share in the warmth of Danish tradition.
